What If Argentina and Morocco End in a Draw in the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025 Final Today?

The Argentina Under-20 national team will play Morocco this Sunday in the final of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile. As the tournament approaches its end, a key question arises: what happens if the match ends in a tie after 90 minutes?

Argentina reached the final by defeating Colombia 1-0 in the semifinals. The team has won all six of its matches in the tournament and is looking to secure its seventh U-20 world title.

They will have almost their full squad available. Coach Diego Placente can count on Maher Carrizo, the Velez Sarsfield forward, who returns after a suspension due to yellow card accumulation. However, Argentina will miss Valente Pierani and Alvaro Montoro. Pierani, a defender from Estudiantes, injured his knee in the quarterfinals against Mexico, while Montoro, from Botafogo, fractured his collarbone.

On the other side, Morocco reached the final after beating France in a penalty shootout in the semifinals. The African team has lost only once in the tournament — to Mexico in the group stage, known as the “group of death.”

Mateo Silvetti of Argentina celebrates a goal.

What happens if Argentina and Morocco tie?

According to FIFA’s official rules for the Under-20 World Cup in Chile 2025, if a knockout match ends in a tie, the first tiebreaker will be extra time, made up of two 15-minute halves.

If Argentina and Morocco are still tied after extra time, the match will go to a penalty shootout, similar to the senior teams’ World Cup final against France in 2022.

If the tie continues through extra time, the winner will be determined by penalties, with the team that scores the most advancing — or in this case, taking home the trophy.
