Sunderland Manager Proud After Remarkable Derby Victory Against Newcastle

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris praised his players after defeating Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear Derby, marking their first win in ten years.

The atmosphere at the Stadium of Light was intense on Sunday as the two teams met in the Premier League for the first time in nine years. Sunderland’s last victory against Newcastle was in 2015, with the teams drawing once and Sunderland losing to Newcastle in the FA Cup last year.

This win, secured by an own goal from Nick Woltemade, has been especially rewarding for Sunderland. The teams were only one point apart before this match, but now Sunderland has extended that lead to four points, continuing their surprising push for European football.

Sunderland is currently sixth in the standings, positioned between Liverpool and Manchester United, while Newcastle, who were unbeaten in five matches before the derby, sits in 12th place.

“I am proud and happy,” Le Bris told Sky Sports after the game. “It was a derby, and our fans expected us to win. This victory is well deserved; the players showed great maturity and were incredible.”

“In the first half, we were tactically strong, focusing on the details. It was important to be more clinical in the attacking area. We maintained good control and exhibited patience at times.”

“The level of maturity was good, and I’m thrilled for the team. This win is beneficial for our fans, the club, and the region.”

“We knew this was a special game, but we need to refocus quickly as we face Brighton next week. Let’s keep moving forward.”
