Mikel Arteta Shares Thoughts After Arsenal’s Thrilling Victory Over Wolves

Arsenal increased their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points after a thrilling 2-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at home. The victory came thanks to a last-minute own goal by Yerson Mosquera. Following the match, Mikel Arteta addressed the press about the late win and an injury to Ben White.

The match was anything but easy for Arsenal against the bottom-placed Wolves. Arsenal welcomed back key players, including William Saliba and Declan Rice.

Bukayo Saka took a corner that hit the post, deflecting off Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and going in, seemingly securing the win for Arsenal. However, Wolves started to pressure after Tolu Arokodare flicked the ball past a stranded David Raya.

Arsenal weren’t finished yet, and in the 94th minute, a Saka cross meant for Gabriel Jesus was accidentally headed into his own net by Yerson Mosquera, bringing relief to Arsenal supporters.

Reflecting on the late victory, Arteta said, “It was a relief, but we should have had a bigger margin. We had a few minutes of poor defense against a team that hadn’t had any shots but managed to score.”

“We committed too many players at times when we should have been more careful. The response has to improve,” Arteta added regarding the game’s closing moments.

On Ben White’s injury, Arteta noted:

“He hasn’t played any minutes. We had to take a risk with Willy; we’re concerned about another injury, but we didn’t have a choice. It looks like a hamstring, and we’ll know more in the coming days.”

Flat Atmosphere in the Stadium

The match was frustrating for fans, with many attacks failing due to poor final passes. Nonetheless, the Emirates Stadium was lively at full-time. Arteta commented on the earlier flatness before the exciting finish:

“Everyone was jumping at full time, which is understandable, but we hope to see that energy from the first minute.”
