Messi Suggests Retirement While Reflecting on Alba and Busquets’ Last Matches with Inter Miami

During the intense MLS Cup Playoffs, Lionel Messi gave an interview to Fabrizio Romano for Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass and 433 media outlet. He spoke about the upcoming retirements of his Inter Miami teammates, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, and hinted at his own future plans.

Busquets announced in September that he would retire at the end of this season, followed by Alba, who confirmed his retirement in early October. Messi noted that seeing these players retire is tough, as it reminds him of his own future.

“Honestly, it’s difficult [to see them retire]. You realize you’ve dedicated your entire life to soccer, and your teammates are starting to leave, which makes you think about your own time coming soon,” Messi shared.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner expressed the emotional impact of their retirements. “And second, we always shared a strong bond both on and off the field, so it feels like losing friends,” he added.

It’s challenging for Messi to say goodbye to these teammates, as they are among the players he has partnered with the longest. Data from Transfermarkt shows Busquets has played 646 games with Messi, while Alba ranks fourth with 416 matches.

Completing the top five are Gerard Pique (506 games), Andres Iniesta (489 games), and Javier Mascherano (414 games)—now his coach at Inter Miami.

The final goal with Busquets and Alba

Since joining Inter Miami two years ago, Lionel Messi has already won the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. The MLS Cup remains the team’s main goal, marking a significant tournament for both Busquets and Alba.

“Hopefully, we can win the MLS Cup because it would be great for the club,” Messi said to Romano. “Winning an important title for the club would be extraordinary for everyone, and for me personally, it would be something special.”
