Jomo Sono Shares That He Earned R50,000

Ephraim “Jomo” Sono, a key figure for Orlando Pirates, has served as head coach for Bafana Bafana multiple times.

In light of the Teboho Mokoena situation, which has resulted in South Africa losing three points in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign, Sono emphasized the significant implications of failing to qualify.

“SAFA needs the World Cup funds because, based on reports, they are in financial trouble,” Sono stated in an interview with KickOff.

“This funding is crucial. When I worked for SAFA as the Bafana Bafana coach, my salary was R50,000,” Sono remarked. “Even then, it felt inadequate, but there wasn’t much I could do about it…

“I put my country first because many have sacrificed for it. Money wasn’t my main worry. SAFA genuinely needs this funding for the World Cup,” Sono concluded.

Despite losing three points due to FIFA’s decision, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana may still be close to qualifying for the FIFA 2026 World Cup. This follows a match where suspended player Teboho Mokoena participated in a 3-0 victory over Lesotho.

Bafana will take on Zimbabwe on 10 October in Durban and Rwanda on 14 October in Mbombela.
