Hearts Manager Raises Questions About Wilson’s Move to Tottenham

Hearts manager Derek McInnes thinks James Wilson’s transfer to Tottenham Hotspur is not the best choice for his career.

Spurs secured Wilson on loan from the top Scottish Premiership team on deadline day, outbidding Arsenal for the 18-year-old. The deal comes with an option to buy, allowing Spurs to assess Wilson before deciding on a permanent transfer.

This season, Wilson has had limited playing time at Hearts, but McInnes believes going back to academy football at Spurs is not a step forward. Last year, Wilson became the youngest-ever senior debutant for Scotland.

“I couldn’t promise him enough playing time given the current situation. I told him, and his agent agreed, that we preferred him to stay, compete for his position, and be part of our team,” McInnes said.

“If needed, he could go on loan within Scotland to gain more experience, and we could potentially bring him back to make the most of the situation.”

“I don’t feel it’s the right move for him. In the end, it’s academy football, and I believe he deserves better. However, this was James’s choice,” McInnes added.

“I wish him the best, as he’s a fantastic young man, and we’ll see how it all unfolds.”
