Galaxy Signs Defender Jakob Glesnes from Union

The Philadelphia Union has traded All-Star defender Jakob Glesnes and the rights to academy forward Jamir Johnson to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Galaxy will pay Philadelphia a guaranteed $1.1 million in the deal—$500,000 in 2025 and $600,000 in 2027. They may also send an additional $1.1 million based on performance metrics.

The Union will maintain a share of any future trade or sale involving Johnson if Los Angeles decides to transfer him.

Glesnes, a 31-year-old from Norway, has been with the Union since 2020, playing in 224 matches and scoring 10 goals with eight assists. He was named the 2022 MLS Defender of the Year and earned his third All-Star selection in 2025.

Philadelphia head coach Bradley Carnell commented, “Jakob has been a key player in our defense and contributed significantly to the team’s success. We appreciate his leadership on and off the field. This trade opens up financial opportunities to improve our roster.”

Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz stated, “We are excited to welcome Jakob and his family to Los Angeles. In six years in MLS, he has proved to be one of the league’s top center-backs and a leader on Supporter’s Shield-winning teams. We look forward to his arrival in January as we get ready for the 2026 season.”

Johnson, 17, has played for Philadelphia Union II and represented the U.S. at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
