The Disciplinary Committee of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has confirmed its decision regarding the controversy that arose during the match between América and Pumas in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the 2026 Clausura Tournament play-offs: there was no improper line-up.

In an official statement, the Disciplinary Committee reported that it had “analysed the referee’s report and its addendum, relating to the match between Club América and Club Universidad Nacional in the first leg of the LIGA BBVA MX quarter-finals, specifically regarding the events that occurred in the 62nd minute concerning the procedure for substituting players from the home team.”

“The Referees’ Committee identified an omission in the player substitution process, given that, during the 62nd minute and simultaneously with the assessment of a possible concussion protocol, player #22 was allowed onto the pitch to replace player #32. Subsequently, following intervention by Club América’s coaching staff, an adjustment was made to the substitution initially announced, with player #22 finally being authorised to enter the pitch in place of player #4.”

“The aforementioned omission does not fall within the regulatory provisions regarding improper line-up set out in Article 26 of the LIGA BBVA MX Competition Regulations, nor in Article 52 of the Sanctions Regulations, which expressly and exhaustively establish the grounds for such a finding: the participation of players not registered on the team sheet; the participation of suspended players or members of the coaching staff; failure to comply with the line-up conditions set out in the Regulations; or the impersonation of players or members of the coaching staff.”

In view of this, the Commission imposed a fine on América for failing to adhere to the permitted number of substitutions and concluded that the refereeing team was responsible for what occurred.
