Flamingos Face Setback in World Cup Match

The Flamingos, Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, lost 1-0 to France in their second group match of the 2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat on Wednesday night.

Under coach Bankole Olowookere, the team showed improvement after their initial 4-1 defeat to Canada. They put up a strong fight against the European team, which included Manchester City’s striker, Rachael Adedini, who is eligible to play for Nigeria.

The Flamingos started well, showcasing better organization and pressing higher on the pitch. Their defense and goalkeeper stood firm against French attacks and even challenged the French keeper midway through the first half.

Despite their determination, Nigeria conceded late in the game when Maïssa Fathallah scored in the 81st minute following a defensive mistake.

This loss leaves Nigeria at the bottom of their group without any points, putting their chances of advancing in serious doubt. Olowookere’s team now faces a crucial match against Samoa on Saturday, October 25, where a win is essential for a chance to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
