Deschamps Announces New France Captain for Match Against Iceland with Mbappé Out

France’s head coach Didier Deschamps has announced that AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan will be the captain for the upcoming match against Iceland. This comes after Kylian Mbappé was injured during the game against Azerbaijan, which France won 3-0.

During that match, Mbappé had to leave the field, and it was Maignan who took the captain’s armband and guided the team until the end. Deschamps mentioned on Téléfoot that it was an easy decision:

“Mike will be the captain. He already showed leadership when Kylian went off and handled the responsibility brilliantly,” said the coach.

This will be a significant moment for Maignan, as it marks the first time he will start a match as captain for the national team, despite having 36 appearances to his name. The match against Iceland is set for Monday, October 13, with kickoff at 20:45 Central European Time.
